Influence: The collection was inspired by the outdoors, skiwear (in particular 60s skiing trousers and jumpers) and boyish, strict tailoring. For AW12 the Margaret Howell woman is strong and intellectual, not whimsical and this was reflected in the pieces.

For the hair Neil created something that was a bit more grown up, effortless and less naive.

Step-by-Step:

• Spray hair with Bumble and bumble Prep and then layer on Bumble and bumble Thickening Spray. Add a little Bumble and bumble Styling Creme to the midlengths and ends if needed. Then diffuse dry with a natural side parting.

• Once dried, pull all the hair using the fingers, over to the right side and tie loosely with elastic at the nape of the neck.

• If the hair looks a little dry, take random sections of the ponytail and wrap around a large curling iron for a couple of seconds.

• To finish, take a small amount of Brilliantine and run through the length of the ponytail. Use some Bumble and bumble Does It All to tame any flyaways on the parting.

Inspiration: The Burberry AW12 collection had a city to country theme, having been influenced by hunting and uniforms. The collection featured tweeds, shearlings, animal head adornments, rabbit fur, beading, puffa jackets, t-shirts, strong silouhettes and unusual body proportions (such as fitted tight waists, bellowed skirts).

The idea for the hair was that it was done, having been blowdried but now, two days later in the countryside, it was more relaxed and had been slept on.

Step-by-Step:

• Spritz hair with Bumble and bumble Prep and layer on Bumble and bumble Thickening Spray or Bumble and bumble Styling Lotion.

• Diffuse dry with a natural centre parting. Once dry, hair extensions were added if needed around the front hair line to get rid of layering.

• Using a large curling iron, create natural movement in the hair by wrapping random sections around the barrell from the chin downwards, so that the top stays flatter and the wave is through the ends like it has dropped out.

• Using the fingertips, loosen hair around the parting so that it is not too flat.

Inspiration: Peter Jensen's AW12 collection was inspired by hat designer Thelma Speirs and featured checks, knitwear, ankle socks, just-above-the-knee skirts and dresses. To complement the models wore their hair in short, grey, wavy bobs.

Step-by-Step:

• After the wigs were coloured from blonde to silver grey, the hair was misted with Bumble and bumble Tonic Lotion and then layered with Bumble and bumble Styling Creme before being power dried into the hair.

• Taking a size 25 curling iron, curl all the hair in small sections so that the ends are kicking outwards.

• Once curled, leave to cool down and then brush out all the curls and backcomb a little on top to lift the hair away from the scalp.

• Finish with Bumble and bumble Does It All and Bumble and bumble Classic hairspray around the front hairline to lift away from the face.

Influence: The Ruffian Autumn/Winter 2012 collection featured hunting influences, the idea of going from city to English estates (a city girl going home to the country), classic English mens textiles, strict tailoring, the theme of duality and a concert for two. Henry Moore's sculptures also played a part in influencing this collection.

Step-by-Step:

• Power dry in Bumble and bumble Prep and Bumble and bumble Styling Creme all through the hair
• Part the hair on the right, then spiral tong hair with the WAM Revolving Iron in a size 13 and WAM Ceramic Curling Iron in size 13.
• Once all curled, brush the curls out using a paddle brush to give the hair a natural curly texture.
• Next, roll up the hair and pin into a faux bob length to show off the neck line. Leave some curls loose for a natural look.

Inspiration: For the boys, the inspiration for the looks were the idea of the charming gangster (Kray twins, Bonnie and Clyde), looking sharp, crystal edge, influenced by Guy Ritchie films, armour, the idea of a jewel heist. For the girl mascot, the look for her was the idea of a good girl gone bad, a girl who was dating a villain and influenced by the Thomas Crowne Affair.

Step-by-Step:

• All the hair was tidied up around the hairline and tapered into the neck
• Bumble and bumble Black Hair Powder and Bumble and bumble Gel was mixed and painted on throughout the hair, like a colour paste to make all the hair dark and slick
• Hair was then combed over to the side a little at the front to look super sharp and groomed
• The gel was then dried in with the WAM Ultimate Ionic Hairdryer and WAM Universal Diffuser until hard

Finally, the time has come for Neil's first show of NYFW: BCBG's Autumn/Winter 2012 show!

Inspiration: The AW12 collection featured fluid fabrics, colour blocking, a modern take on fur, 1940's lean silhouettes and drew inspiration from Bauhaus and constructivism. To complement, Neil created a romantic look with a low ponytail and a bedhead fringe; a look that wasn't too perfect, with hair falling over one eye.

Step-by-Step:

• First layer Bumble and bumble Prep with Bumble and bumble Thickening Spray.
  
• Next, create a low, diagonal side parting on the right.
• Blowdry, smoothing the hair out but not super smooth. Remember, the look is meant to not be perfect.
• Section off the fringe, making sure it is triangular and not too deep.
• Tie off a low pony tail with elastic.
• Brush the fringe section in so that it blends, tie with the remaining elastic.
• Add a little Bumble and bumble Prep on the pony tail and diffuse for a little texture.
• Release some flyaway sections over one eye and the look in complete.

Inspiration: The themes of the collection were equestrian, control and restraint (but not S&M!), romantic but tough and featured a mix of textures such as bandage and beaded.

Step-by-Step:

• Spritz from Bumble and bumble Prep all the way through the hair and then layer with Bumble and bumble Styling Creme through the roots only.

• Diffuse hair naturally to create texture through the roots.

• Tie a ponytail just above the occipital with elastic, leaving some extra elastic aside.

• Attatch hair extensions to the ponytail by tying with the remaining elastic and making sure you colour match the hair to the exact hair colour.

• Cut the extensions mid back to create heavy blunt ends.

• Blowdry, then iron smooth the hair with a bevel on the ends.

Inspiration: Nina Simone inspired both the collection and the look for the hair.

Step-by-step:

- Begin by spraying Bumble and bumble Prep into the hair and then layer with Bumble and bumble Thickening Spray and Bumble and bumble Styling Creme. Powerdry this into the hair.

- Take a halo section about 2cm all the way around the hairline. With the rest of the hair, lightly backbrush it in sections and then, taking the WAM Digital Straightening Irons, press the backbrushing to set in the texture before gently brushing it out.

- Attach a hair-up donut to a section of the hair around the brown, then brush the rest of the hair around the donut. Use Bumble and bumble Does It All to secure the hair.

- Next, crimp the halo sections around the hair line with small crimping irons - Babyliss Root Boost are perfect for doing this and creating a kind of mini-crimp/afro hair type texture.

- Brush the crimping section into the rest of the hair.

- Finally, an indentation can be placed into the hair using elastic and holding spray.

Inspiration: Handcrafting, arts and crafts and Henry Moore helped to inspire the Burberry SS12 collection. We saw a mix of parkas and prints with the classic whimsical Burberry girl meeting the classic sexy Burberry girl (Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, anyone?!)

The Look: Fresh Air Hair

Step-by-step:

- With the hair in a natural centre parting, prep the hair with some Bumble and bumble Prep spray and then layer with Bumble and bumble Thickening Spray (if needed) and Bumble and bumble Styling Lotion.

- Diffuse the hair with the WAM Ultimate Ionic Hairdryer and WAM Universal Diffuser. Once dry, instead of brushing the hair through, take the WAM Ceramic Curling Irons in size 28 and take random sections of hair, wrapping it around the barrel. Work from the midlengths to the ends, leaving the hair on the iron for only a few sections so as not to get too much of a set wave.

- Once you have achieved the required look, use fingers to shake the hair out and let the hair fall loose and tousled. A light spritzing of Bumble and bumble Shine through the ends helps to keep the hair looking piece-y.

Inspiration: Naval blues and stripes, colour blocking, pale khakis, sporty late 1920's (we're predicting this to be a huge trend for next season!)

Step-by-step:

- Spritz the hair with Bumble and bumble Prep and Bumble and bumble Styling Lotion before blowdrying this into the hair with a large round brush.

- Create an off-center parting, mist with Bumble and bumble Does It All and then using a flat bristle brush and fingers, pull the hair into a ponytail aroung the occipital bone.

- Optional: On the left side, add a small twist into the hair.

- Be sure not to tie the hair, just gently twist the ponytail around on itself and tie into a loose knot. Secure the knot with pins and grips. Put out flyaways from around the hairline.

Inspiration: Custo Barcelona's Spring/Summer 2012 collection was entitled "the Tripolar Collection," which was divided into three groups; Dual (androgynous looks), Kaleidoscopio (patchwork fabrics inspired by the kaleidoscope) and Mirame (evening wear inspired by 3D technology). To complement the look Neil created hair that was a mixture of colours and textures and a bit tomboyish. Hair was sleek, super glossy and shiny and placed in a low ponytail. Both boys and girls were given the same look to inforce that androgynous look.

Step-by-Step:

- Start by spraying Bumble and bumble Prep and Bumble and bumble Styling Lotion onto the hair before powerdrying both products in.

- Using the WAM Digital Straightening Irons, smooth all the hair out into a slick texture.

- Pull the hair into a low, centered ponytail with a left side parting. Next, apply some Bumble and bumble Straight using a colour/tint brush all over the tied hair, making sure to avoid the ponytail.

- Finish the look with some Bumble and bumble Shine on the ponytail. The overall look is one of dual texture and a simple ponytail with a bit of an edge!

Inspiration: The collection was inspired by the idea of a girl falling in love with a soldier boy who's bein sent away so of course there was a military influence running throughout. The look was a mix of naivity and playfulness and unlike all the dual texture looks we've been seeing lately, this is one with dry texture.

Step-by-step:

- To get this look you need to work with the natural texture of the hair. Add some Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray as needed and diffuse it into the hair using the WAM Universal Diffuser. Use a curling iron to accentuate the natural wave in the hair.

- Pull the hair into a loose side ponytail with a side parting. Finish off with a spritz of Bumble and bumble Does It All.

- The boys in the show all wore hats. Their hair was cut into a short back and sides military haircut.

Inspiration: For this look and collection the inspiration was a mix of architectural and tribal with art deco meeting Navajo, Bo Derek meeting George Washington. We saw metallics with the models rocking tough girl attitudes that were powerful and fierece and not feminine.

Step-by-Step:

- Start by spritzing the hair with Bumble and bumble Prep and Bumble and bumble Styling Lotion before blowing the hair smooth with the WAM Ultimate Ionic Hairdryer and Bumble and bumble Round Bristle Brush.

- Flatten out the top area with the WAM Digital Straightening Irons.

- Make a sharp center parting in the hair and then section the hair up from the top of the ear to ear. Tie this section into a ponytail.

- Take another section from the top of the ear to just below the ear and tie another ponytail.

- Pull the remaining hair in the nape of the neck into a third ponytail.

- Attach the first ponytail to the second and then to the third ponytail. Finish the look with some Bumble and bumble Does It All.

The Look: Dual texture: Uber shiny with a dry matte horse's tail braid

Inspiration: Ruffian's collection for SS12 was inspired by the idea of jockey-club-girl-meets-princess, which was visible through the merging of jockey silks and sportswear (a trend for SS12? We saw it at BCBG too) with chic evening wear that we saw on the catwalk.

Reference: Charlotte Casiraghi (granddaughter of Princess Grace of Monaco)

Step-by-Step:

- Spray Bumble and bumble Prep and Bumble and bumble Thickening Spray throughout the hair before layering with Bumble and bumble Styling Creme. Power-dry the products into the hair.

- Add extensions if needed to thicken the braid (Neil used some drawstring ponytails as a quick cheat version!)

- Put the hair into a ponytail, then lightly backcomb the hair that's in the pony. Using the WAM Digital Straightening Irons, go over the backcombed hair to seal in the texture.

- Brush out the backcombing with a paddle brush and braid the ponytail into a three-strand braid. Tie the hair with clear elastic and cut the end of the ponytail blunt.

- Finish the look with a spritz of Bumble and bumble Shine on the top, back and sides of the hair (avoiding the braid) to give a shiny, dewy gloss.

Inspiration: Marlon's SS12 collection was entitled "Super-Mart" and was influenced by the idea of high definition printed clothes that were vibrant, bright and electric with elements of colour blocking as well as monochromatic looks. To complement the collection the models needed to be perfectly groomed and Neil was on hand to do just the thing!

Step-by-Step:

- Cut the hair around the sides and back to neaten it up. Work some Bumble and bumble Prep and Bumble and bumble Styling Creme into the hair and blowdry it back away from the face with a small round brush to create volume and height. If the hair is too short to blowdry, the WAM Pro Mini Styling Iron can be used instead.

- Finish with some Bumble and bumble Texture and Bumble and bumble Spray de Mode to hold the hair in place, keeping the sides looking square.

The Look: Dual Texture: Wet into Dry

Inspiration: BCBG's Spring/Summer 2012 collection was influenced and inspired by colour blocking (that trend has staying power!), art deco and the 1920s and tracksuits and modern athleticism (perhaps Max had the Olympics in mind?). Step-by-Step:

- As always, start by prepping the hair: spray Bumble and bumble Prep and Bumble and bumble Thickening Spray into the hair before diffusing it dry with the WAM Ultimate Ionic Hairdryer and WAM Universal Diffuser.

- Work in Bumble and bumble Gel into the roots from the crown to the front and sides of the hairline then comb through with a wide-tooth comb. Leave the ends dry.

- Using the WAM Ceramic Curling Irons in size 28, iron out a gentle wave though the midlengths and ends.

- Place a hair net over the gelled areas and diffuse.

- Once the gel is dry, take off the hair net and finish the look with some Bumble and bumble Shine spray to give the hair some extra gloss.

Oh, those celebs! What ever are they like? They always seem to be doing something with their hair and the past 48 hours has been no exception with not one, not two, but FOUR celebs debuting new locks!

The dip-dye trend seems to have no plans of coming to an end anytime soon if actress Kate Bosworth's new look is anything to go by. The pretty former all-blonde girl showed off her new blue-green dip dyed ends at a recent Coldplay show in LA:

Other new looks debuting in LA included Katy Perry (remember she was brunette before accidentally going ginger before going blonde?) who seems to have already gotten bored of blonde, instead choosing to go... pink!

Back here in good ol' Blighty we've had Jessie J showing off her newly coloured 'do as well. Jessie has gone from being a brunette to... purple!

And finally, Nicole Kidman has been spotted on the set of her new film, "Paper Boy" with peroxide blonde hair...

Of course we couldn't kick off a best tressed list without mentioning one of the guests of honour. Kate wore her signature down do with bouncy, wavy locks and a pretty pale lilac dress. Do people actually find Kate's hair enviable up close in real life? Vanity Fair's Krista Smith thinks so.

Blake Lively

Another person who evokes quite a bit of hair envy herself, Blake Lively looked... interesting on the red carpet in a Marchesa one shouldered number which kept her covered up - or should that be swamped - more than usual. Questionable dress aside, we have to hand it to Blake for having the best updo at the event with this cute messy braided look.

Zooey Deschanel

Another member of the down do red carpet brigade was Zooey Deschanel who wore her hair in cute girly curls. Her husband, Ben Gibbard, also opted to wear his hair down, too.

We recently talked about wearing hair accessories - that's accessories made from hair, not accessories made for hair - and now Salon have put together of artists who use hair in their work.

Carrying around or wearing a locket with a loved one's lock of hair is a trend that has since more-or-less died out. Whilst the Victorians used to mourn the loss of loved ones through the creation of mourning jewellery (essentially portable shrines made out of the deceased's hair), these days we don't really have any use for discarded hair. That is, until now.

Stylelist has compiled a gallery featuring accessories and items made from human hair with things ranging from sunglasses to earrings and sculptures.

And we recently spotted the work of artist Kerry Howley on BellaSugar who has made some intricate necklaces from human hair for her collection (yep, there's more than one) entitled "Attraction/Aversion".

Whilst we're amazed by how she created the necklaces and how fiddly it must've been to do (after 'Do of the Day we have a newfound appreciated for detailed hair), we just can't get over what we refer to as the "ickyness" factor.

Howley has said of her collection: "The necklaces are made of human hair, a familiar material that we take pride in... However, once off of the body hair becomes an innate source of aversion . . . [I] wanted to see if [I] could make discarded hair attractive again."

An interesting concept, definitely, but would you wear this trend?

They say that three's a trend and we're just waiting for the next celeb to get on this bandwagon! In the past couple of days there have been two celebs on our radar who've opted for the chop and are wearing their new hair well.

Evan Rachel Wood (aka ex-Mrs-Marilyn-Manson-to-be) has previously had quite long, flowing, glam Hollywood locks but we have to say we are loving her new shorter do! Last night saw the 2011 MTV Movie Awards ceremony being held and this morning our eyes were fixed on the computer screen to find our who was the best tressed on the red carpet. Here's our top three...

Emma Watson's pixie crop is growing out nicely into this short do which works brilliantly with her gorgeous Marchesa dress.

My personal girl crush, Mila Kunis, rocked sleek, straight locks last night which works with the more relaxed vibe of the MTV Movie Awards.

And Selena Gomez (Mrs Justin Bieber, if you didn't already know!) worked this half up, half down do with her cute Giambattista Valli dress.

It's not often that we bring you a shoot that one of our stylists didn't work on but we just couldn't resist sharing this one with you!

Us Weekly reports that for the premiere of Brad Pitt's new film, him and Angelina chose to get their hair did together! Have you ever had your hair done at the same time as your other half? Do you think the couple that gets their hair did together stays together? Well judging by Brad's past as a hair chameleon who likes to mimic the 'do of his female counterparts, we reckon it was his idea to tag along with Angelina! What do you think? Here's the evidence:

Is bigger always better? Last night some of you may have tuned in to catch the disaster that is "Made in Chelsea" and hear someone utter the words "Big hair is a turn-on". Well we wonder what he would've made of Cheryl Cole and Sarah Jessica Parker's big bouffants?

Whew! What a week it's been for hair. First up we had the Met Gala for gorgeous dresses and tresses and we also spotted a trend on the red carpet for hair accessories!

Speaking of hair accessories, here's a new kind of hair band we stumbled upon this morning. It's a hair band with cat ears attached to them (fake, obviously real ones would be way gross) that can move like real cat ears when you think! I love the accompanying video of the ears in action, moving when the girl grabs a doughnut out of a bag and sees a guy she fancies. A part of me would love to have a pair just for my own amusement but I doubt I'd actually ever wear them in public. Would you? [Fashionista]

Back to human hair now with Karl Lagerfeld confessing that he's too scared to cut his hair: "I'm afraid it won't grow again [if I cut it]. And I'm not very gifted for hairdos. This is the quickest thing in the world. It takes less than five seconds. I have someone who comes to the house and washes it, puts in the dry shampoo, and takes of it because I have no time. I don't even have time to go to the dentist. I'm busy but in a pleasant way. I'm the one who wanted to do all of it so I can't complain." [Fashionologie]

Blake has dyed her hair for a role in the film "Hick". Speaking to People, Blake said that "I thought [my character] needed red hair. It helps when you're playing a role, when I don't feel like myself. And I don't really feel like myself with red hair" although this doesn't mean that Blake isn't loving her new locks "I love it! I feel like Ariel".

This week in Lady Gaga Hairwatch: her hair is going green! Yup, Lady Gaga has supposedly admitted that her hair has started to turn green after all the bleach she's had in it and to combat the unwanted colour change she's dyed the front part black whilst keeping the rest blonde. Also in Gaga hair news: the singer's on the cover of Harper's Bazaar with long pink locks.

So Gaga's gone from pink to blonde to black and blonde whilst Drew Barrymore has gone red! [Grazia]

In other celeb colour changing news: Jennifer Lopez has spoken about how she started to go grey at the age of 23 and now has her hair dyed every two weeks. [ELLEUK]

Finally, Time magazine (really Time?!) has an illustrated guide on how to achieve the same look as Donald Trump. Not sure why you'd want his hair in the first place but let us know if you give this a go! [Time]

Nicki Minaj, that wonderful hair chameleon, has told People that Marge Simpson's blue bouffant was "so cutting edge and before her time". She told the magazine that she never thought she'd rock the do but after wearing similar styled wigs, she came to the realisation about Mrs Simpson.

She also talked about her daily hair routine (I love that she has one!) saying that she has to change them daily (is there a wardrobe of wigs?) "Sometimes I wake up in the morning and I am like, ‘This is a high-top day’ or ‘This is a bob day,’ but when I get my clothes on that’s when I see. Of course I wear them more than once. Wash it and rotate, and it is good as new."

"My wigs are ever changing in height, width, color, size. They make me feel happy... Wearing them makes me feel that I can be a different person every day and that is kind of exciting."

I love Nicki's experimental playfulness when it comes to her hair and the different styles she opts for. As someone who recently went blonde for an hour or so, I can definitely see the appeal of changing your look without worrying about damaging your hair - Lady Gaga, take note!

Cheryl Cole, one of the faces and barnets of L'Oreal has told ContactMusic that she'd like to try a shorter style. As for if she'd actually take the plunge the singer said, "No, no , no. I want to and I think that it must be amazing to just wash, spray and go. But I wouldn't suit it... You have to have an unbelievable face to carry it off and confidence in abundance."

She then went on to say, "I just love long hair. It's a comfort blanket. With short hair you can't hide behind anything."

We're quite surprised that Chezza doesn't think she has the confidence to pull off a shorter 'do (singing on stage to thousands isn't exactly wallflower type behaviour, after all) and reckon she could easily rock a new cut. But then again, how many of us would love to go for the chop but wouldn't be brave enough to do it?

Major apologies! It's been ages since my last nail blog so I thought it was about time to show you what I've been up to. I've mainly been playing about with my polishes doing different designs rather than wearing actual colour that I didn't feel there was much for me to type about. In short, here's a couple of the things I've done lately...

Here are some nails inspired by Marc Jacobs! Each nail is a different print from one of their collections or perfumes. I was really quite pleased with how this came out and my right hand wasn't too bad either!

Another Marc Jacobs-inspired nail set. This time I took inspiration from a dress from their Marc by Marc Jacobs SS11 collection and was amazed when this was retweeted by Marc Jacobs on Twitter as well as by nail queen Sophy Robson! I think it's fair to say that these nails were a hit!

So what wacky nails am I sporting today? Well, nothing too outrageous although it does feel a bit odd for me not to be wearing more than three colours on each nail, I have to admit! I've been buying so many lovely polishes lately and haven't gotten around to wearing them that I thought it was about time to wear a solid colour again (although with an accent nail, of course!) Yesterday I found these 3D nail stickers in my room that I had forgotten about and decided to do something rather simple with them, using them for my accent nail... The stickers I decided to use were white bows with pink polkadots and some sparkle on top so I decided to use a nice bright pink. With this in mind I had to rummage through my collection for the perfect shade of pink...

And the perfect shade I was after was Deborah Lippmann's "Pop Life" (which has been on my "must use" list ever since the lovely beauty PR, Holly, sent a few polishes over to me). Also in the same bag as "Pop Life" was "Bring on the Bling" which was just the right kind of sparkle that would go well with the sparkle on the bow stickers.

I ended up with two coats of "Pop Life" and two coats of "Bring on the Bling" on top of all my nails barring my ring fingers, which were my accent nails. I love how "Pop Life" applied - it went on somewhere a little bit sheer but in a nice way (not streaky at all) and I think it would've been quite nice with just one coat. However, as I wanted bright pink so I opted for two coats for a rather girly and opaque look. It did get me thinking that this is quite a buildable colour and at some point I may try some more gradient nails with this as it feels like it may lend itself quite well to that effect.

"Bring on the Bling" is a sort of sheer, pearly, sparkly polish to be used on top of other colour (or by itself for a subtle look). It's super pretty and I feel ridiculously girly with this combo - especially with the bow as well - but I like it!

What with the buzz surrounding her latest music video for ET, MTV has compiled a visual history of Katy Perry's different hair looks from her other videos including the rather natural looking "I Kissed A Girl" and bright colourful wigs of "California Gurls". Our favourite though? The retro style as worn in the "Thinking of You" video which has been a hit with some of clients too. [MTV]

"Whip My Hair" singer Willow Smith was spotted at LAX earlier this week sans braids and with new orange and pink hair extensions instead. Are you a fan of Willow's new colourful look? [Taletela]

Do blondes really have more fun? Emily Browning (and natural brunette) doesn't seem to think so! The actress dyed her hair platinum for her role in "Sucker Punch" and is reported to have told Teen Vogue, "It was kind of like a funny little social experiment. Neil is featured not once but twice in the April issue of British Vogue in an editorial spread called "L'Air du Temps" and again in a beauty story entitled "Arch Angels".

Last week saw the passing of Elizabeth Taylor and we also heard about some of her beauty habits. Today, Contact Music reports that Taylor's former longtime stylist, Jose Eber, told Piers Morgan that the Hollywood star loved to cut her on/off husband, Richard Burton's hair.

Speaking to the CNN presenter, Jose said, "Elizabeth cutting Richard's hair... which people didn't know that she was so talented. One thing she would have liked to become was a hairstylist because she had that great talent about cutting hair.

"And she would cut Richard's hair all the time... she told me that. And she even would cut her own hair when I wasn't around... She was always very shy about it and always felt like she didn't do a great job, then would call me and to reassure her that she did a great job."

The tabloids can be rather harsh on those in the public eye and this week saw them taking aim at Prince William. I feel a bit sorry for poor old Wills who's had to put up with headlines about his hairline for a while now but since his nuptials were announced, there's been an even more intense focus on his hair. This week the tabloids have been claiming that he's undergoing laser therapy as an attempt to regrow some hair in time for April 29th. Now, I'm not sure about you but to me this sounds a little nuts. Laser therapy. Who knew such a thing existed? But wait, it doesn't stop there! Laser therapy apparently involves wearing "bizarre headgear ringed with LED lights... a laser-hair rejuvenation helmet that zaps scalp follicles with LED light therapy." [MSN Australia]

This week also saw Lady Gaga announce that she's losing her hair. Due to how often she has to dye her hair to maintain her look she recently had to "get a chemical haircut because my blonde hair is falling out." [The Sun]

John Frieda recently released some figures that show women are going greyer younger, with two thirds of them putting it down to stress, and have coined the term GHOSTS (Grey Haired Over Stressed Twenty Somethings). I'm not going to lie - I've had the odd grey hair here and there since I was about 13 (I'm 22 now) so reading about this doesn't come as a surprise to me at all. Are you surprised by the findings? Suckerpunch star Abbie Cornish revealed to Jimmy Kimmel that whilst filming an action scene on set, her life was saved by a whisker - or rather, hair.

In this scene another actor came at Abbie with a WWI rifle that a steel bayonet attached to the end "but the timing was off and this steel bayonet comes at my head and hits me on the side of the head... It was a really hard knock. I went down and when I came to I had blood in my hand and blood running down my face."

We applaud Abbie for doing her own stunts but can't imagine how scary it must've been for her and the others involved. Thankfully though it was found that the metal grip that was holding her hair extensions in place had actually defected the force of the blow - quite miraculous! "Apparently the metal hair clip did really save my life and all I have now is a little scar that didn't need stitches," she explained to the chat show host.

So if you ever find yourself compiling a list of pros and cons of hair extensions you can add "may be life saving if you're an actress starring in an action flick" to it!

Isn't it some unspoken rule to always be tactical about someone's haircut even if it's bad?) she then tweeted "thanks for pointing out how much you all hate it, too. helpful". Today sees the launch of two new services here at Windle & Moodie: Speed Styling and Speed Colouring. Based upon our stylists' collective experiences of working backstage at shows creating looks against the clock, we came up with the idea of two speedy services with the time impoverished in mind.

So what is Speed Styling and Speed Colouring you ask? Well, both speedy options have five different looks and styles to choose from. With Speed Styling you can pick from Tousled Chic (tousled beach babe meets rock chic, giving hair density with definition), Braiding, Glam Pony (predicting this will be a big hit!), Short Makeover (for short hair, you can opt to challenge our stylists to come up with a new look for you) or a soft updo.

For Speed Colouring the options are Colour Enlightening (addition of colour around the face to give your features an extra lift), Gloss Wash (an all-over colour that can be used to achieve shine or colour change), Flash Colour (bold flashes of colour randomly placed to create interest and fun within a haircut), Colour Syncing (carefully chosen to compliment natural hair, the colour is painted or combed on to re-balance natural tones) and Stipple Colour (a technique producing the effect of small placement of colour on the surface of short fashion and urchin haircuts. 3:15pm: It's off to Bauer to meet with Rose at Grazia for a Tousled Chic look. And the results?

Here's how the look was created: "Use a large size barrel iron and gently wrap the hair around the barrel leaving the ends out. Slowly slide the barrel up and down the hair to ensure the heat doesn't set the hair into a curl. Finish by gently loosening the waves with a brush and mist with fine holding spray if necessary".

Exciting news! Neil's hats made in collaboration with Flora McLean of House of Flora have been featured in the new "50 Hats That Changed the World" book! Here's what Neil had to say about it:

Last Monday March 7th a new book was released by The British Design Museum, published by Octopus Books called " 50 Hats That Changed The World"

It's the latest in The Design Museums '50......"  series that includes Fifty Dresses, Fifty Shoes, Fifty Bags, Fifty Cars and and Fifty Chairs.

The books are designed to showcase what The Design Museum considers to be 50 of the most influential worldwide designs relating to each book's subject.

The new Hat book, lists the top 50 Hats and Headwear that have made a substantial impact in the world of fashion and design today.

The Iconic Hats that I designed with Flora McLean of House of Flora have been featured in the book on page 96/97 and we've also got the inside cover too.

So this week began with the Carnival in Brazil and supermodel Gisele was in attendance with hubby Tom Brady. Brady wore his hair up in a ponytail and for some reason this became TOTALLY newsworthy with lots of different outlets reporting on it. Not only was it bad enough that he was seen out wearing a ponytail (!), but there was a bit of confusion over whether he might be wearing that ponytail in a scrunchie. Now, to me this ponytail business doesn't seem like such a big deal but this discussion about if it was in a scrunchie? This is ridiculous! And is anyone else reminded of that episode of Sex and the City where Carrie tells Berger that the heroine of his book cannot, under any circumstances, wear a scrunchie? [The Cut]

In other hair news, Kate Winslet is on the cover of British Vogue's April issue (which also features Neil chatting about center partings) and with much lighter, much shorter locks. She looks fab. [Racked]

Rashida Jones has said that she has had the same hairstyle since she was 5. I now totally feel a slight affinity with the actress as I've pretty much the same hairstyle since I've had hair (which I've had since I was born) and the most exciting time of my hair history was probably when I went from a center parting and straight fringe to a side parting and side fringe. Continuing on our show reports from Neil Moodie backstage at the shows during Fashion Week season, we're now onto the last week: Paris Fashion Week. First up we have the Veronique Leroy AW11 show...

The inspiration for the show was ambitious secretaries: the chief of them all! And how does an ambitious secretary wear her hair? In a look that Neil calls "tough typer" that includes a low, severe side parting...

Here's how Neil got the look:

• Prep hair with Bumble and bumble Prep spray, and Bumble and bumble Thickening Hairspray. Make a deep, low, side parting to create severity.

• Using the WAM Ultimate Ionic Hairdryer, and a large round bristle brush, smooth out all the hair to look shiny and healthy.

• Once dried, spray the crown area with Bumble and bumble Holding Spray. To keep this area flat, take a large flat bristle brush and brush away from the parting. Let the hairspray dry, then spray the flat bristle brush with more hairspray (Bumble and bumble Classic is good for this) and brush the rest of the hair flat into a ponytail just above the occipital bone, keeping the hair as smooth as possible.

• Tie hair tightly and then mist with more Bumble and bumble Holding Spray to hold in place.

• Spray hairspray onto the finger tips and smooth out any flyaways using your fingers.

N.B. This look may need some help from a friend to perfect.

Yesterday saw the Leonard AW11 collection being shown in Paris as part of Fashion Week and we've just received an email from Neil who created the hair for the show.

The inspiration for the show were bold peony prints and shapes in Peruvian colours and to compliment, a look of "soft confidence" was created for the hair.

Here's how Neil got the look:

• Prep hair with Bumble and bumble Prep Spray and Bumble and bumble Thickening Hairspray, putting Bb Texture through the roots to mid-lengths on the top.

• Blow-dry all the back of the hair with the WAM Ultimate Ionic Hairdryer and a large round bristle brush, then add the WAM Universal Diffuser to the dryer and natural dry the top so it looks more matte and textured.

• Once the hair is dry, take the WAM Digital Straightening Irons and smooth out the mid lengths to ends only on the top sections.

• Next take an elastic and pull hair into a ponytail around the middle of the back of the head, keeping the nape hair very clean. Tie tightly then spray any flyaways in the nape.

• Taking a little Bumble and bumble hair powder (matching to the hair colour) and mist over the top section to help create a little more texture. Loosen any areas through the top if they are too tightly pulled.

This is one cool book for all lovers of hair. Illustrator Christina Christoforou has a new book out called "Whose Hair?" The aim of the game is in the title - can you guess who the barnet belongs to? From celebrities to politicians there's a lot of potential answers but will you guess correctly?

I think this is a great concept for a book considering how many people feel that their hair is intrinsically linked with their personalities and identities.

The Guardian has some images from the book with multiple-choice answers if you fancy a go yourselves. (I won't tell you had badly I did!)

Neil just sent us his backstage report of the Just Cavalli show in Milan! The inspiration for the collection was beautiful chiffon floaty dresses meets mens structured tailoring so to compliment, a hi-gloss meets matte look was created for the show. Here's Neil's step-by-step:

• Hair was prepared using Bumble and bumble Prep and Bumble and bumble Styling Lotion then blow dried smooth with WAM Ultimate Ionic Hairdryer and a large round brush.

• On the top of the head, the new Bumble and bumble Texture product was applied from roots to mid lengths. The top area was roughly dried to create more a more matte texture.

• Then, a ponytail was made below the crown. Bumble and bumble Brilliantine was used at the sides and back to control the flyaways and the ponytail was straightened with WAM Digital Straightening Irons.

• Bumble and bumble Straight (a high silicone based product) was added to the sides, back and the middle of the ponytail to give the extra hi-gloss/wet look.

• The ponytail was then attached with elastic just above the nape of the neck. Bumble and bumble Big Shine was used at sides, back and on the ponytail but not on the top!

We caught up with designer and Fashion Fringe 2010 winner, Corrie Nielsen, a month before her collection debuted at London Fashion Week and went backstage on the big day with Sergio and the team! Take a look at the video to find out about the collection and the showstopping finale outfit!

I don't know how Neil does it - all these shows, four different countries, tests, the actual shows, sending me email reports... it's enough to make my head spin! The multi-talented Mister Moodie has sent me these fab photos from backstage at the Mark Fast for Pinko show and has also told me a little about the collection. Read on to find out more...

The inspiration for the show was S&M meets Twin Peaks and to compliment, Neil created a "strict slick" look that features a metal collar clipped around the neck and hair (very kinky!).

Here's Neil's step-by-step:

• Prep the hair with Bumble and bumble Prep or Bumble and bumble Tonic Lotion, and then layer with Bumble and bumble Thickening Hairspray.

• Using a large round brush and the WAM Ultimate Ionic Hairdryer, blow-dry all the hair smooth and with some volume. Blow-dry all the hair back away from the face. Next take the WAM Digital Straightening Irons and smooth over the surface of the hair. Do not iron completely flat and use the rounded edge of the iron to give the ends of the hair a little bend.

• Take Bumble and Bumble Straight and Bumble and bumble Gel. Starting from just below the crown, apply Bumble and Bumble Straight to the roots and a few inches away from the roots - don't take product through to the ends. On the sides, coat the hair with Bumble and bumble Gel so this dries hard and will stop the hair from collapsing but still apply Bumble and Bumble Straight to the top section all the way to the front hairline.

• Take a fine tooth comb and smooth out the surface of the hair as tight to the head as possible, only combing hair to the nape of the neck. From the nape downwards use a flat bristle brush to smooth out the ends and to avoid getting any product in the ends of the hair. Check to keep the ends of the hair in a blunt line if possible (cut if necessary). Mist with a little Bumble and bumble Shine spray, then attach neck collar around, keeping the hair at the back, inside the collar for a stricter look.

It's Friday so why not put your feet up at the end of this long week where London Fashion Week turned into Milan Fashion Week and catch up with what Neil and the team got up to at Margaret Howell and Mark Fast. Unfortunately security at Burberry was tight as expected so no footage or photos from them. One of our lovely trainees Kamila is looking for hair models who would like to get a classic graduated bob. She's been with us for three years so is one of the more experienced assistants and needs models to pass her test.

It's the perfect haircut to emphasise strong facial features such as your eyes, cheekbones and jawlines and can also be cut to compliment wide or narrow faces.

Our training days take place on Mondays but there's a possibility for Wednesday and Friday appointments as well.

Yesterday was our last day of London Fashion Week and boy, was it frantic. Kicking off with an 11am call-time in Kensington Gardens for Burberry, our day finished with the 6pm showtime of Mark Fast... How did it go, you ask? Well let me tell you...

BURBERRY

It's freezing when we arrived at the Burberry tents, all checked-in, wrist-banded up and ready to go, when we're told a little about the look. The collection has a 60s influence and it's all about the silhouette and shape of the garments, so to compliment it all, Neil's opted for low ponytails for the girls. For the look there's only minimal products being used - Bumble and bumble Tonic Lotion is sprayed into the hair and then layered with Bumble and bumble Styling Lotion before it's all dried with the WAM Ultimate Ionic Hairdryer and WAM Universal Diffuser. After, the hair is colour matched to a fine piece of elastic which will be used to tie up the pony around the nape of the neck with the hair tucked behind the ears. Any other products can be used but that's at the stylist's judgement. It all sounds pretty straightforward until Neil drops a bombshell on us - 19 of the girls will be arriving from the Christopher Kane show where wax has been applied in sections to their hair and of course, washing will be needed!!

Chaos ensues, the girls are whisked backstage to get dressed where the stylists are told to watch the hair like hawks as in the rush, we don't want any ponys coming undone when the girls are being dressed. The backstage area was crazy and at one point I saw Anna Wintour walk in, all calm amongst the frenzy before her.The collection was well-received and I could massive hear sighs of relief from everyone once the show was over.

MARK FAST

Not that the day was over for some of us, oh no! We were doing the hair for Mark Fast as well for a showtime of 6pm and had another team over at Somerset House waiting for us. One car had arrived and whisked Neil and his assistants to the show whilst the second car got stuck... lost in translation and traffic, it would appear.

After what felt like an eternity, our car finally pulled up and we arrived to the show rather late where the frenzy here matched the frenzy we had just left. We had walked right into the middle of things and as I started taking photos and filming for our YouTube channel, Neil explained the look which he dubbed "wild emergence". The hair was sprayed with Bumble and bumble Prep and then layered with lots of Bumble and bumble Styling Creme, with the front hairline layered with  Bumble and bumble Texture. Next, using fingers, grooves and lines in the hair were created by clipping with pin curl clips and the hair then diffused until crispy dry. Then, starting from the nape, small random sections were taken and loosely pin-curled and pinned to the head. This was repeated all the way up to the crown, so to create the feeling of a short haircut. Finally, the hair was then sprayed with Bumble and bumble Coloured Powder to create a matte/clay like texture in the hair.

 









 

This is a long overdue blog post! What with the hecticness of New York Fashion Week and the chaos of London Fashion Week and the jetlag inbetween it's just been non-stop! But enough with the excuses! Here is a long overdue nail blog...

So before I jetted off to NY I was just itching for a new manicure and after being sent some lovely Deborah Lippmann polishes just before I was eager to use them. As I'd be away for a week that included both New York Fashion Week and Valentines Day, I thought I'd need something that would be stylish without being cutesy - did I want to have heart sequins on my nails all week long? Perhaps I was overthinking it, no, I definitely was! I reached for "Bad Romance," and paused - would wearing "Bad Romance" on V-day cause me to have, well, a bad romance of my own? In the end I realised I was probably being ridiculous anyway and besides, I've waited far too long to not wear it!

For the manicure I decided on half moons again and as luck would have it, I discovered some nail tip stickers that were more curved than the ones I already had. These were perfect for creating half moons, which I did using "Bad Romance". I then added gemstones to the curve of the half moon from a nail art set that I got from Poundland which is probably why they don't sparkle but it's a fab set all the same for anyone wanting to do nail art on a budget. I then finished the look off with some Seche Vite and voila!

Unfortunately the good photos I took with my camera and not my Blackberry got lost inbetween all the FW photo taking so this will have to do. Needless to say, this photo isn't half bad! You can see what "Bad Romance" is really like - dark black with gorgeous purple/magenta sparkles in it. I could easily have stopped after the first coat as I found it quite opaque but I ended up with two layers of colour as I liked how you can sort of see the layers, much like how you can with "Across the Universe". My thumb shows "Bad Romance" how it is usually but on the other fingers you can see how it could also be mistaken for a darker colour in low lighting.

Here's a photo taken about a week and a half later...! You can see how much my nails have grown since then - gross! Amazingly I didn't lose any gems in the whole week and only a tiny amount of the polish chipped off (I'm also right-handed so my left was pretty much intact).

The verdict: I LOVE "Bad Romance"! It's a new but firm favourite of mine and I can't wait to use it again but will have to try and think of another way to wear it first! I'm currently rocking some pink holographic polish I bought out in NY which I will post about soon but after that I'm thinking "Waking Up in Vegas"....

This morning we had a calltime of 6.15am for the Margaret Howell show at 9.30am. We all arrived rather bleary-eyed and once Neil arrived, he pumped up the tunes to try and wake us up! Luckily it worked, beautiful hair was sported by all the models and there wasn't quite so much a mad a rush as we've experienced at some of the other shows.

Fashion's new love affair with ballet seems to carry on into AW11, with Margaret Howell's collection being influenced by dancers. "Who's the Margaret Howell girl? She's someone who's quite carefree and has just finished a ballet rehearsal so she's piled on the layers before stepping out into the freezing cold outside," Neil tells me. With this in mind, he calls the look for the hair a "post-dance twisted knot" which describes it perfectly.

The models were all given blowdries with a roundbrush before some had their hair twisted into knots and secured with elastic, whilst those with shorter hair kept it loose. The only products used were Bumble and bumble Prep, which was then layered with Bumble and bumble Styling Lotion and Bumble and bumble Thickening Hairspray before being dried into the hair using the WAM Ultimate Ionic Hairdryer. Once the hair had been blowdried, no other products were used as Neil wanted the natural texture of the hair to be utilised. Hairbands were added to the models after, with the band covering the ears and some fine flyaways peeking out from under the band.

This is something that Sergio has been working on for some time now and we've also been working on our own Corrie project that we'll tell you more about soon. For now though, Sergio can relax a little (before the 6:15am call time for the Margaret Howell show on Sunday) as all his hard work that went into creating the three looks for Corrie were shown this morning.

Corrie's collection was entitled "A Winter's Melodie" and featured Elizabethan elements with ruffles and puffed sleeves. We loved how dramatic the collection was, which demanded our attention from the get-go.

The three hair looks for the models were braided updos or "braidos," which the majority wore, a couple of girls with heart-shaped hair (very Elizabeth I, she would definitely have given the collection the royal seal of approval, no doubt) and two hair hats (as in, hats made out of hair, painstakingly handmade and handpainted with Sergio's own fair digits). I loved the braids! (I wonder if Sergio will give me a braido for do of the day?) and all of the looks complimented the collection really well. We're so proud of Sergio for all his hard work!!

I'm sure by now most of you have heard about Vidal Sassoon: The Movie. Produced by the founder of Bumble and bumble, Michael Gordon and directed by Craig Teper, the documentary charts Sassoon's early life in a Jewish orphanage right up to modern day with a mix of gorgeous visuals and stunning black and white and colour footage.

As regular readers of my blog might have picked up, I'm not a hairdresser and am extremely low maintenance when it comes to my hair. To me, I knew Vidal Sassoon as the name of a brand on hair care products and that was about it. I knew he was a real man but besides these two tidbits of info, my knowledge on him was strictly limited.

Having said that, this film isn't just something for hairdressers. Whilst the audience on the particular night we went comprised largely of hairdressers, this is something that would be enjoyed by anyone. I say this because it was a fascinating look at the man behind the name, at least for me. From humble beginnings to being pushed into a profession he didn't really choose, to excelling at it and changing the face of hair forever - it was just really inspirational to watch! By the end of the film I was in awe of the man who had revolutionised what women did with their hair - I think I had heard of women back in the "olden days" going into salons, getting their hair done and having it set in a particular style for days but it wasn't something I had really thought about. Learning about how Vidal came along and liberated women from the confines of their hair during the 60s and the whole sexual revolution was just a little bit mindblowing, especially when all he was to me before was a name. I can safely say that I have a newfound appreciation for Sassoon now! I also have to say that visually, the whole film was stunning too and a real treat for the eyes.

The Q&A after featured Vidal, Michael Gordon and Craig Teper and lots of starstruck stylists! When Vidal walked into the room there were lots of whoops and cheers and a standing ovation and I think everyone there was just in awe of a man who had done so much for the industry. There were a few questions from the audience, and lots of "thank you for being amazing" comments too but my favourite had to be when one woman stood up and had said she had written Vidal a letter. Not just any fan letter mind you - she had worked for Vidal in London doing his PR for him and he had given her some advice and told her that she need not go to this big important event she had organised for me (when everyone else had said she absolutely had to). Because of what he said, the events of her life changed forever (for the better, I should add!) and she had written this letter to tell him what she had gotten up to in that time and where she was now. It was a really sweet moment, and they hugged as he took the letter from her and I'll admit that my eyes got a bit watery!

There was another question that stuck with me from that night: a man had asked if Vidal ever thought that there would be another hairdresser as revolutionary as him. Being the charming guy that he is, he said that he did think there would be but you really have to wonder if it's true. There is no doubt that Vidal is a master at his craft but he also exploded onto the scene - and the mainstream - during a time of change. The collision of the two meant that what he did wasn't just a part of hairdressing history, but a part of history itself. Whilst there are so many talented people out there in this field (I work with quite a few of them!), you really do have to wonder if another thing like that will happen again with social history changing so drastically and hairdressing playing a part in it. I guess only time will tell...

It's our last day here at New York Fashion Week and it's ending with a bang at the Herve Leger show. Describing the collection, Neil throws the following words at me: bondage, sporty, aerodynamic and graphic - how exciting! To complement this, Neil has created a look which he has called Soft Slick, which incorporates all of these elements and perfectly desrcibes this super-cool look.

I have to say, it's probably one of my favourites. I love the mix of slick and soft, natural hair!

Here are Neil's step-by-step instructions:

• Start by misting the hair with Bumble and bumble Prep, Bumble and bumble Styling Lotion and Bumble and bumble Thickening Hairspray then power dry it in, drying the hair away from the face

• Take the WAM Digital Straightening Irons and starting from the nape of the neck, smooth the hair through with the iron using the curved outer edge of the body to create lift at the roots and a bevel at the ends

• If the hair is a little thin or not blunt on the ends, add a few matching coloured hair extensions to fill for bluntness

• Section the sides from ear to temple on both sides, take Bumble and bumble Gel and coat the sides of the hair with it. Take a fine tooth comb and pull the hair back with the comb to the center of the back of the head, keeping the comb in the hair and dry with the WAM Ultimate Ionic Hairdryer until the gel has hardened. Some Bumble and bumble Holding spray could be added for extra hold

• Repeat on other side of the head and pin the sections to the center of the back to secure

• Backcomb the top section roots only to create a little volume right the way to the forehead, then smooth this hair out using a flat bristle brush from the front through to the back so it blends in with the back section and also covers the pins in the center from the side sections

• Secure top section using Bumble and bumble Classic and add Bumble and bumble Shine spray to the mid-lengths and ends

COMING UP NEXT: LONDON FASHION WEEK!

An 11:30am calltime for a 3pm show seems like a blessing after all those 6am and 7am calltimes we've been getting! Today's first show (there are two) is for Max Azria and the collection is totally wearable cool as you would expect from the man behind BCBG and Herve Leger (the latter of which we'll be working on later on this week). The AW11 collection is a mix of feminine and masculine - there's aspects of mens tailoring in the collection, tuxedos (new season trend after Ruffian's tuxedo-inspired collection? We think so!) and oversized coats paired with and layered over beautiful, flowing dresses.

With this in mind Neil created a look for the show which he calls "tomboy meets feminine".

Here are Neil's step-by-step instructions:

• Start by spraying Bumble and bumble Prep into the hair before layering with Bumble and bumble Styling Lotion and Bumble and bumble Thickening Hairspray, blowdrying it all into the hair with a large round bristle brush which will ensure that the hair is smooth but with a little volume

• Take a Mason Pearson brush and spray with some Bumble and bumble Does It All and brush the hair into a high ponytail just below the crown, making sure hair is pulled back tight and smooth. Tie with elastic

• Take the WAM Digital Straightening Irons and smooth over the surface of the hair of the ponytail to tame flyaways and to smooth down the hair

• Take small piece of hair from ponytail and wrap it around the elastic to hide it. Next take some Bumble and bumble Shine spray and mist the hair that’s pulled back to give extra glisten. Leave the ponytail more natural and just brush through with a flat bristle brush to make complete the look

There's no rest for the wicked as we went straight from creating perfect ponys for Max Azria to a look which Neil has dubbed "rehearsal chignon" for Custo Barcelona. The AW11 collection was inspired by dance and how clothes are designed to move with a dancer's body and featured male and female models. Spotted backstage: the hottest-androygnous-model-on-everyone's-lips-right-now, Andrej P backstage who looked incredibly beautiful - wow! Spotted on the front row: perfect gentleman, Wyclef Jean!

• Once dry, gently brush the hair with a flat bristle brush. Then, just using your fingers, pull the hair back away from the face and into a ponytail and twist the hair up and wrap into a loose chignon around the curve of the head

• Secure with pins and grips and mist the hair with some Bumble and bumble Does It All to secure the look

After the madness of BCBG in the morning came the relatively calm and - dare I say it - relaxed atmosphere of the Marlon Gobel show. It was held at the historic Amory building which is just incredible to look at and so was the collection itself. Fun, a tad bit preppy but with a good sense of humour, we all adored Marlon's collection that featured blazers and jackets painted with forests and ships in a storm, over-sized tassle belts and THE MOST AMAZING SHOES I HAVE EVER SEEN - EVER! Generally I don't pay too much attention to menswear but Marlon's collection just made my jaw drop! Based on the idea of secret societies, Neil called this look "Superman meets secret society" and used lashings of Bumble and bumble Prep, Bumble and bumble Gel and Bumble and bumble Shine spray to create the look which featured a mini gelled quiff at the front. Thirty-two male models, a sunny afternoon, a beautiful building, an awesome collection, no mad rushing around - Neil, please can you do more menswear shows?!

Coming up next: Ruffian

This one, we were afraid, might be a bit of a killer with a calltime of 6am and 32 models that needed updos for a showtime of 9am. At one point we only had around an hour left and only ten models done but everyone managed to focus and get the work done and beautiful hair was sported by all the models - hurrah!

The Ruffian AW11 collection is entitled "Tuexdo Park," and although I didn't find this out till later on it's pretty obvious that the history of the tuxedo inspired the duo of Brian Wolk and Claude Morais. My first clue was the nails:

Our first show of New York Fashion Week was BCBG which showed this morning at 10am, with a yawn-inducing calltime of 7am (NY time)!

The collection was made up of girly, pretty pieces that were partly influenced by the 1920s/1930s (as seen in the drop-waist dresses) and the 1970s (as seen in the soft, floaty shapes and materials that were used). Because of this, Neil wanted to create something that would toughen up the girls' overall look and the solution? A left-side parting that hits in line with the middle of the left eye and blowdried hair tied into a sleek - but not flat! - ponytail.

Here are Neil's step-by-step instructions:

• Apply Bumble and bumble Prep from roots to ends before layering the hair with Bumble and bumble Styling Lotion all the way through

• The hair is then combed through and a side parting is added, which is in line with the center of the model’s left eye

• Blowdry the hair using the WAM Ultimate Ionic Hairdryer and a large round bristle brush to achieve smooth and straight hair that still has a little bit of volume at the roots

• Using a flat bristle brush, smooth the hair but without brushing it too much so that it’s not super flat and then tie into nape of neck using elastic

• Take a piece of hair and wrap it around the elastic to hide it for a cleaner look

• To stop the ponytails from being too flat, run it through with the WAM Digital Straightening Irons to give the ends a bit of a bevel

• Spray some Bumble and bumble Does It All onto the palm of your hands to help flatten down any flyaways and run the ponytail through your hands to keep the ponytail smooth and contained

• Before the girls go on, some Bumble and bumble Shine is sprayed onto the parting

Well well well, it seems that this week is the first week I haven't seen a Kardashian in hair-related story! So with that in mind let's talk about who did make the cut in hair news this week...

Rihanna premiered her new video for "S&M" and with a title like that we knew it'd be raunchy. Cue countless stories about how the video has now been banned in 11 countries and how Camp Rihanna are working on edits and cuts to make a daytime-friendly version. We won't talk too much about how controversial it is because chances are you've read all those reports already so why don't we take a look at Rihanna's hair and nails - our favourite topic to talk about! BellaSugar has screencaps of all the different looks in the video including Rihanna with frizzy frizz and some fab talons!

Everytime I go to do 'Do of the Day there is always someone who says I should just cut it all off (most of the time it's Jamie). Honestly I'm rather tempted to do it (especially in summer because right now I am loving how my long hair keeps my ears warm!) but it's a big decision to make! The Daily Mail ran a piece about the pixie crop on all ages, which is surprisingly a rather interesting read if you're considering a big cut, too.

In non-hair but head-related news, men's hats are in! At least that's what the New York Times are saying. So we've now got barrettes making a comeback for the girls and hats for the guys...

The Eighties have been back for a while now (maybe it never really went away in the first place) and now perms are too, supposedly. Apart from the fact that they're no longer called perms but "body waves" (since it's apparently far too traumatic to call them "perms" now). What's the difference you ask? These aren't your tightly done curls but more gentle waves which apparently also use gentler chemicals. [NY Times]

A few weeks ago the beauty web was aghast at how Jennifer Anniston slated "the Rachel," calling it the ugliest cut she had ever seen. Well are coming out today that Jen didn't hate the Rach ("I liked it at the time but I started to grow it out after about eight months. But it just wouldn't die") at the same time that the apparently newly-engaged Miss Moss (soon to be Mrs Hince) debuted a new do that's a little reminiscent of "the Rachel". Coincidence or could this be the start of "the Rachel" revival? [Fashionista]

Finally, we are PSYCHED that New York Fashion Week is just around the corner! We can't wait to fly out, see the new collections and looks and take in that frenzied, hectic backstage environment we've come to know and love. Hair inspiration comes in all shapes and sizes and sometimes from the most unlikely people... Including Justin Bieber! Okay we admit it, he is famous for his hair as well as his songs but we were a little surprised when we read that designer Barbara Tfank (who has dressed the likes of Vanessa Redgrave and Mrs Obama) has used Biebs as a source of hair inspiration for her upcoming V-day presentation. Speaking of his famous cut, Tfank said "Justin Bieber looks fresh, innocent and youthful... and it frames the face really well." [Style.com]

I've wanted to do gradient nails for a while now where one colour blends into another or a darker shade blends into a lighter one. The idea of using a sponge to do the blending sounds awfully messy to me and whilst I've heard that jelly polishes are good for doing gradient nails, I can't seem to find any! In the end I decided to try and make a go for it with some glitter polish which wasn't too opaque so I could layer up to get an effect similar to a gradient.

I'm still in love with Ciate's "Dangerous Liasons," which I used for my half moon manicure and decided to pair it with Deborah Lippmann's "Boom Boom Pow" - a gold glitter that contains real 24K gold dust (how luxurious!!). After applying the base colour of dark red, I used "Boom Boom Pow" to add on a layer of sparkle on the tip of my nail and then added more and more layers which stretched further down until there were only a few millimeters of red polish visible.

Being a complete perfectionist, I wish the gold fading into red was a bit more smooth and less noticable. Maybe it's just me but I can see where a block of polish begins and ends and it is driving me crazy! However I've gotten loads of nice comments about it and people asking how I did it so I guess it's not completely a failed attempt! (Please excuse the state of my nails in the pics - as usual I was too excited to clean around the nail after I did it!) Definitely one that needs a few more practice attempts to get the hang of... Next time I'm going to try "Boom Boom Pow" over a black for a super-luxe look!

I'm not sure if the barrette has ever particularly been especially in or out of fashion (unlike headbands who had a certain Blair Wardorf of Gossip Girl to thank for their revival) but the Wall Street Journal thinks they're going to be hot hot hot this season. Who could forget those super-cool hair clips made with hair (!) on the models at Carolina Herrera? They say three's a trend so add in Chanel's uber-luxe version of the barrette (we expect an uber-luxe pricetag to match the beaut) and Rodarte's jewelled contribution and you've got yourselves a certified trend! Last night was the Screen Actors Guild Awards in LA and you know what that means: beautiful actresses wearing beautiful dresses out in full force yet again. Whilst oogling over the looks for the night, we noticed the usual pretty updos: January Jones with her Marmite vintage look splitting opinion across the interwebs and Tina Fey wearing a low, side chignon, and we also noticed the rise of the downdo. Stars such as Mila Kunis, Lea Michele, Hailee Steinfeld, Hilary Swank, Claire Danes, Julia Stiles and Christina Hendricks all chose to wear their hair down; most of them in gorgeous, glamorous tumbling waves. They say that three is a trend, so are we going to be seeing more downdos from now on?

Since this week on the blog is going to be vintage-themed with vintage dos of the day, I decided to give my nails a vintage makeover as well. I've been itching to try a half-moon manicure but knew it was going to take a while to get right... I wasn't wrong.

I used Ciate's "Dangerous Liasons" - a perfect blood red - for the look and have fallen in love with the colour so much I'll probably wear it next week as well (although in a different form, of course). Using the brush the polish came with, I painted the nail, leaving a half-moon shape along the bottom. This wasn't too hard on my thumbnails where I could pretty much go over my natural half-moons but on the other fingers it proved tricky. I ended up drawing a line diagonally from one corner to the middle on each side of the nail and then smoothing out the pointed end into a rounded one, which took some time and lots of tries (I think my ring fingers took four goes each!) It got a bit messy on my right hand (I'm right handed so using my left is always a bit of a struggle to do anything other that just painting the whole nail) so polish remover and cotton buds were on standby for clean-ups.

Another method that loads of people swear by for this look is to use those paper reinforcement hole stickers. I might try this next time but what I didn't like in all the examples I saw using this method was how messy the end result looked and how there seemed to be a visible edge between the half-moon and the rest of the nail.

I really love this look and with the dark red it feels especially glamorous! Tricky to do and rather time-consuming but oh-so worth it!

First she whipped her way into our hearts with her super-cool, uber fun video for her song "Whip My Hair". The fashion forward nine year old (wow, don't we feel old and rather unaccomplished in comparison!) has been spotted filming her new video for "21st Century Girl" in LA and we're already excited to see the finished product! The video below was shot by a passerby and is a little shaky but you can still make out Willow with long yellow braids, backed up with dancers sporting what looks like a pink mohawk, long spiky hair and balloon pigtails!

The ever-colourful Nicki Minaj was spotted out and about in London looking as vibrant as ever. Whilst I love the pink lipstick and ah-mazing gold statement necklace (Nicki is the queen of making a statement right now, after all) but the hair... I'm not such a fan of. Some people have said it's camo hair, some have said peacock. For me, it looks a bit leopard-like which I normally love but it's just not working for me. Sorry Nicki but something about the green and blue unfortunately reminds me of the mould that I found growing on my cake last night...

Mondays are training days at Windle & Moodie when the trainees take over to shampoo, blowdry, style and cut their way into becoming a stylist themselves. Today Kamila came up to me to show me a book of vintage hairstyles that she had gotten recently as she knew that we've given a theme for this week's round of Do of the Day - vintage. As Kamila's model had cancelled on her, she had a couple of hours free that she wanted to fill and we decided to try out one of the looks which is based on Anne Baxter in "All About Eve".

First Kamila started with my fringe, spraying some Bumble and bumble Does It All onto my hair before using the WAM Ceramic Curling Iron in a size 25 to curl it, before clipping it in place.

Next was the rest of my head! For this part Kamila had to curl my hair in sections working from one side, to the other and around the back to finish where she had started so she was putting curls in my hair in rings or bands. A bit like how a tree tunk has rings, if you will. This took some time and Kamila was probably dizzy by the time she had finished as she had to keep going around in circles!

Once that was done, all the clips and to come out and I was left with a head full of curls.

Taking some Bumble and bumble Grooming Creme, Kamila rubbed it into her hands before working the curls out with her fingers. The next step after this was to use grips to pin down the hair around the crown area so that it was flat against the head as helpfully shown in Kamila's book:

Finally, using some more grips, style the curls so that they go up and over the visible grips before and you're done!

Last night in Berlin was the HUGO BOSS show which was attended by the likes of Hayden Christensen, Tilda Swinton, Chloe Sevigny and our very own Neil Moodie! Unlike the actors, Neil wasn't just there to oogle the clothes on the pretty models (which included the stunning Freja Beha Erichsen who opened the show) but to work his magic on their hair and that's precisely what he did. HUGO BOSS livestreamed the event on their website last night as well as employing a team of reporters to blog about the show (pretty cool for a brand to do so). If you were looking for hair news this week chances are that most of it will have been Golden Globes related. Whilst we ooh-ed over the dresses, ahh-ed over the hair and coo-ed over the make-up, there is such a thing a overkill - especially when every website you read/check for stories has some sort of GG coverage. Another week and another Kardashian hair news story. Yup, Khloe Kardashian who only recently dyed her hair red (which was actually nice) has gone back to dark locks, reportedly due to contractual obligations with E! who wanted the Kardashian 3 to look more like sisters (and apparently one having red hair doesn't convey "sisters" as much as being brunettes?) Whilst Khloe was only a red head for about a week or so, many websites are now championing red as being the hair colour trend of the moment, thanks to the likes of actress Christina Hendricks and model-and-Mrs-Jack-White, Karen Elson (who was advised by Hendricks to delve into the dye). Red-headed models also strutted down the catwalks at Mulberry's S/S11 show after hair inspiration came in the form of Florence Welch of Florence and the Machines and more recently, even RPattz has been spotted with red hair! The hair chameleon was spotted wearing a pink Marge Simpson-esque wig which prompted Gigwise to round-up the worst hair offenders in the music biz (and promptly reminded me of the mess that was blonde Mark Ronson, sob sob!) It's almost time to kick off Fashion Month with New York Fashion Week but right now we're currently in the midst of Berlin Fashion Week. Among those showing their collections at BFW is designer A.F. Vandevorst who opted for an unusual hair look on his models.

Now, I'm not sure about you but one of the most annoying things for me personally is getting hair in my mouth and all over my face so a huge well done to the models in this show who I'm sure had sky-high shoes to walk in as well as the hair blocking most of their vision. A rather cleverly thought out statement 'do to focus all the attention on the clothes (as opposed to the model), it might be but a trend? I don't think it'll catch on!

Last night my fingers were just itching for something new on my nails. Luckily Neil had given me more than a few packs of Nail Rock designer nail wraps and I was eager to try them out. After some hmm-ing and ha-ing I decided on a metallic leopard design and set to work filing and buffing my nails in preparation. When that was done, I admit I felt a bit nervous! I mean, I've been painting my nails since I was about six or so and have mastered that down pat, no problemo. This was a whole new territory and although I've been dying to try it out, I was worried - what if I made some sort of mistake and ruined my nails forever?! After seeing Zoe Pocock (Mrs Nail Rock herself) applying a stripey design to Neil's little finger in three seconds flat earlier this week, logically I knew there was no chance of that happening but I still thought I'd screw it all up - could it really be that easy, that fast?

Once my nails were prepped and ready and I was too then I took the biggest "sticker" and placed it on my thumbnail. Hm, definitely needs some heat to stick it down. Using a travel hairdryer I blasted some heat on for a couple of seconds and then folded the softened, warm wrap around the curve of my nails. The next step was the one I wasn't so sure about... Taking a nail file and filing the excess wrap off vertically? Won't the whole wrap just come off?! It didn't actually, and I celebrated on the inside when the excess stuff started to come away from the design stuck on my nails. After I took a few seconds to marvel my first attempt at Nail Rock-ing.

This is really bad of me to admit but I couldn't find my nail scissors at all last night after I'd applied the wrap and I had to try and do the best I could with... nail clippers. Although I think I've done a not-too-bad job, I wouldn't recommend it! I also had a bit of a minor problem with some unstuck flaps - can't think how to describe them so check out the pic below:

This really isn't too noticeable unless you're looking at my nails from that viewpoint (and who does that really?) so it's not a major problem. Also this happened to me on both of my index fingers only so I'm thinking that possibly both index fingernails are kinda deformed in some way or that I just had trouble applying Nail Rock to these fingers in particular (the latter is probably more true). Whilst I can't say too much about wear right now or what the taking off process is like, I will update on that later in a follow-up post. So far it seems pretty well-stuck on so I'm hoping for the best. And they've already the attracted the attention of a smartly dressed business man sat across from me today on the Tube who was gesturing to my nails with his wife!

Next time I would love to try out the plain gold metallic or the studs design - how awesome would that be?!

Before John Mayer and waay before the mess with Brangelina, Jennifer Aniston was known as Rachel from Friends, and what was Rachel Green from Friends known for? Her hair! Remember the hairstyle that spawned a thousand copy-cat-cuts across the globe, the one people so adoringly referred to as "the Rachel" because it was just that iconic? Yep? Well today the internet is aghast over Ms Aniston's latest interview - and spread - in Allure magazine.

Firstly, let's talk about the photos that accompany the interview which are, to put it lightly, a bit weird. Jen is a gorgeous woman but the pics aren't very flattering to say the least as she looks a little lifeless and dull. The real weird one for me at least, is the one of her with a clipped in fringe, unbuttoned silky pyjama top and a... teddybear in one hand. - creeeeeepy!

Speaking to the US mag of the cut, Jennifer said, "how do I say this? I think it was the ugliest haircut I've ever seen" before pointing the blame in the direction of her long-time stylist, Chris McMillan joking, "I love Chris, but he's the bane of my existence because he started that damn Rachel".

Last night whilst most of us were in bed, the Golden Globes took place across the pond and there were beautiful dresses, even beautiful-er people and gorgeous hair to ogle and admire. Here's our top five of the best tressed!

Dianna Agron

The Glee star looked uber pretty and feminine in this light coloured J Mendel dress with her hair pinned back with glamourous, 1940s style tousled waves. Her mix of accessories - gold Salvatore Ferragamo clutch, diamond necklace, bracelet and earrings, silver hair clips and dark hued nail polish worked perfectly to create an beautiful overall look.

January Jones

January opted for a rather revealing Versace dress but chose to pair it was a classic, super glossy do. Even with a dress like that, we can't stop staring at her hair and how healthy it looks!

Lea Michelle

Another Glee star on our list, and another pretty dress; this time by Oscar de la Renta. Lea's messy chignon perfectly compliments her ruffled dress and I love the pop of turquoise on her ring against the blush-colour of her gown.

Natalie Portman

The blooming actress looked every inch a star wearing a Viktor + Rolf dress that allowed her growing bump some room, paired with strands of diamonds around her neck. We also love Natalie's hair - a French twist that is said to have been inspired by Breakfast at Tiffany's.

Scarlett Johansson

Looking lovely in another light-coloured dress was Scarlett Johansson in this number from Elie Saab. With a super glam dress like that it's no wonder that Scarlett's hairstylist on the night looked to the 40s and 50s for his inspiration in created this textured updo.

Also spotted on the red carpet: Sandra Bullock debuting a new fringe, perfect ponys adorning the heads of JLo and Julianne Moore to name a few and RPattz, the world's favourite vampire, sported a new dyed look.

Our very own Neil Moodie spent six days in Ibiza working out at a bootcamp with makeup artist, Wendy Rowe. Not content with just getting trim, Mr Moodie also started blogging his and Wendy's experiences on Vogue.com! It almost makes you want to do it yourself... almost... Why do the Kardashians keep kropping up in my quest for hair news? The three sisters - that's Kim, Khloe and Kourtney are reportedly being sued for breaching a kontract they had with the Revenue Resource (the one where they promoted a Kardashian kredit kard that was promptly kriticised for it's ridiculous charges). Part of the agreement was that the three sisters would receive a hair and makeup allowance of... are you ready for this... $7K! Oh Brit-Brit, you always seem to be quite unlucky when it comes to hair. Ms Spears was spotted out and about in Los Angeles with her hair pulled back and the line of her extensions clearly visible. It's been said that hairdresser to the celebs, Kim Vo has taken charge of Britney's locks so here's hoping she'll have gorgeous hair soon. [Daily Mail]

The ever-beautiful Regina George, I mean, Rachel McAdams has been doing a spot of promotion walking the red carpets at various premieres for her new film, Morning Glory. Her appearance at the UK premiere caused a fuss partly for her choice of outfit (I've never read so much coverage on someone's sideboob!) and partly for her hair/makeup look. Sporting rather bright yellow eyeshadow was quite unusual and I'm not sure if I'm sold on the look, but her hair was also interesting. The first article I read on Rachel's look only had one photo and her hair looking volumous and glossy - nice, basically. However, upon looking at other articles her bouffant hairdo looked a bit too buffed up, with some sites suggesting that she used a Bumpit.

Finally, in WTF hair news, a man who underwent a hair transplant procedure 19 years ago recently shaved his head to reveal a swear word written on his head from when his surgeon removed tiny hair roots?! [The Sun]

When Neil stopped by today saying that he had a present for me I wondered what it could be... A DVD with footage on for me to edit? Possibly some photos from his bootcamp in Ibiza? Nope, it was much better than that!! Neil was working yesterday with one of the creators of Nail Rock - you might have heard of them since these stick-on-with-a-hairdryer nail designs are everywhere right now - and blagged his way into getting more than a few packs for me - woop woop! I've been meaning to try Nail Rock for some time now and I'm so glad that I've been given more than a few packs to try out. I am seriously LOVING the metallic gold leopard design (been looking for a good gold polish that actually looks like the wraps for some time now) so that's first on my list to try out but I'm also curious about the purple leopard, polkadot and stripey designs too. I'll be sure to upload pictures plus a review of the wraps (the video on their site makes it look easy peasy) soon so keep an eye out for that! Guys, we know that a lot of hair coverage is either all about the girls or about balding, which understandably you don't want to to think about. Ahh, it's that time of the year again where everyone makes resolutions to scoff less sweets, start exercising and cut out all the alcohol. For our very own Neil Moodie it was that time of the year to jet off for warmer shores (Ibiza) with friend and make-up artist, Wendy Rowe to.. soak up some sun? Not quite. The two are currently working out every inch of their bodies at a boot camp complete with early morning starts, a weigh-in overlooked by Royal Marine Trainer, hours of circuit training and blogging for Vogue.co.uk! It's the only just the first week of 2011 and already there's been some big hair news this week. First up the woman behind the iconic beehive, Margaret Vinci Heldt, was honoured on Tuesday for creating the look. 'I used to tell my clients: "I don't care what your husband does from the neck down, but I don't want him to touch you from the neck up." [via Daily Mail]

On Wednesday two big things happened. Firstly Beyonce's fierce ad for L'Oreal Feria hair colour debuted on the interwebs prompting everyone who covered it to report just how super fierce she was in it. [via Grazia Daily]

In evening the People's Choice Awards took place over in LA which has inspired quite a few best dressed/get the look posts for the remainder of the week. Khloe Kardashian (I'm not too familiar with why the Kardashians are famous or what they do besides liking the letter 'K' a whole lot but they seem to get quite a lot of column inches) debuted a new colour on the red carpet resulting in blog posts and polls of "Do you like Khloe's new hair?" (For the record I think it looks quite nice but still no idea of why she is famous...) Much fuss was also made over Kristen Stewart's 'do and for those wanting to get the look, InStyle has the details. Hard-to-ignore Katy Perry also got the attention of many as she appeared in a brightly coloured dress (dare I say it, I actually liked the colours especially with the nail polish colour she paired it with). Her hair was done in sweet locks, which Stylelist has step-by-step instructions for by Katy's own hair stylist.

Last night also saw two big events taking place Stateside with Lady Gaga showing off the fruits of her labour with Polaroid as well as her new locks, which are such a pretty colour. I wonder how long she'll stay with this look before getting bored... Also getting attention for her hair was Drew Barrymore at the Covergirl 50th Anniversary party who turned up with dip dyed hair, which has since been much blogged about (as well as THAT Jil Sander dress). Cat Deely (her who just loves to SWIIIISH!) also attended looking gorgeous with perfect waves in her hair and wearing a super pretty black dress.

And what happened today? Well, Gordon Ramsey appeared in public today sans the surgical cap he was last seen wearing. Cue polls asking if Gordon's hair looked any different than it did pre-transplant... James Nesbitt's hair transplant a few months back was far more noticable, and dare I say it, seemingly more successful. And since we're on the topic of male hair loss, Colin Firth (swoon) was seen with what appears to be a bald patch after jetting into LA yesterday whilst news reports flooded in about how the cure for male pattern baldness might just be in the works - hurrah!

Also in the news lately is the story of Kayla Martell, aka Miss Delaware. Kayla has alopecia areata and as a result has left her without hair since she was a child. Although she won her title whilst wearing a wig, she has been told that she can compete in the Miss America pageant without one. I think what Kayla is doing is incredible, especially when you think about how much hair is important to some women (and men, too) so I wish her the best of luck! [via Bella Sugar]

And now, time for an end of week distraction. Ever wondered what the angle of your ponytail says about you? Jezebel has posted this intriguing image which will tell you just that. Seemingly the lower your ponytail, the smarter you are so does that mean I'm some sort of super genius since I don't wear my hair up at all?!

I love Sophy Robson's work! I'm rather ridiculously addicted to her blog and Tumblr and have some nails that she did for an ELLE shoot as the wallpaper on my computer at home. Ever since seeing the super fun nails that she did at Giles' Spring/Summer 2011 show (I also love Giles so the two were a match made in heaven) I've wanted to have a go and finally I found some time in my busy nails to-do list (yes, my nails have their own schedules, don't yours?!) to do it!

From left to right I used Barry M (the limited edition purple colour they did for Boots a while back with the gold top), Barry M Sky Blue (think that's it's name?), Revlon Tropical Temptation (been meaning to use this polish for months!), Ciate Dangerous Liasons and Barry M Minted. I did the the eyes with a some Barry M white nail polish and the regular brush that comes with it, and then added black dots on top. I actually tried this same design a few weeks later using some nail art pens but I found it quite tricky to do it with the pens - I think I must be used to using regular nail polish as I squirted far too much paint onto the nails so they were bulging eyeballs instead of cute, friendly eyeballs. Out of all the nails I've had in the past four or five months (and there's been a fair few) these were probably the nails I got the most compliments on - even from the guys! I really love how they just brighten up dull winter days too, this is definitely one I'll be wearing lots of!

Chances are that if you’re on Facebook or Twitter your feed will have been inundated with people crying “WHAT?!” over last night’s episode of X-Factor: “WHAT?! Aiden’s out?” “WHAT?! Katie stays for another week?” And “just WHAT?! is up with Cheryl’s hair?” Whilst we can only offer our consolation about Aiden going and Katie staying, we’d like to take this chance to speculate on just what kind of look Cheryl was going for…

It's the end of Fashion Week season and we're in Paris! Neil has three shows to do (although one is two in one which might prove to be a little confusing...) and of course we'll be Tweeting during the lead up to the shows as well as posting our blog report straight after... Stay tuned!

Mus / Veronique Leroy

After taking the Eurostar at 5-something-am this morning, I've arrived in Paris a mix of super excited for my first Paris Fashion Week shows and super tired so I grab a coffee and a bite to eat and head on the Metro to the venue at Palais de Tokyo, an art gallery that I suddenly remember I've been to before on an art trip during A Levels. It's a pretty cool space but I have to say, I loved the view just outside it of the Eiffel Tower (spoken like a true tourist!)

After five minutes, Neil arrives with plenty of boxes and bags and cases! There are tonnes of Bumble and bumble products, WAM hairdryers, tongs, etc., hair extensions which will be used on the models when they arrive. Speaking to the team, Neil tells us that today there are two shows, one after the other. Firstly there will be the Mus presentation so the models will be static as opposed to walking down the catwalk. After the presentation will be Veronique Leroy's show where the models will be walking. For Mus there are not one, not even two but FOUR different looks! These are Ville (a straight blowdry), Dejeuner (wavy hair), Transit (wavy but less wavy than Dejeuner) and Voyage (girls wearing hairs with the hair tied back at the nape of the neck). And as if this wasn't already quite confusing enough (well, for a hair novice like me) the girls for the Veronique show will be prepped at the same time as the Mus girls! Luckily for Veronique there is only one look (phew!) and that is what Neil describes as "post-sex-hair". Take a look at what happened backstage...

Leonard

Monday morning and we have a call time of 9am for the Leonard show, with the show starting at 12noon. We're in a tent by Pont Alexander III with a view of the Eiffel Tower. There's only one look for Leonard and the words on every hair stylist's lips are "perfect ponys". Bouncy, shiny, perfect pony tails. The collection itself is full of brightly coloured prints and the girls lined up backstage are twirling their dresses for the cameras.

Gabriele Colangelo

Having flown to Milan straight after the London Fashion Week shows (click to read our blog if you haven't already), Neil's first stop was the Gabriele Colangelo show on September 24th. Gabriele had taken inspiration from famed photographer Wolfgang Tillmans for his collection and the end result was a collection that was quite minimalist and feminine. To complement the look, Neil chose to give the models a glamorous, ladylike blowdry which resulted in heads full of healthy, shiny, beautiful hair.

Just Cavalli

Right after the Gabriele Colangelo show came the Just Cavalli show the next day on September 25th. The collection was full of the glamorous, boho-chic that is synonymous with the brand and a glamorous wave was given to the models' hair. Cowboy hat? Check. Floral maxi dress? Check. Tousled hair? Check. You're all ready for summer the Just Cavalli way!

Neil and the team at London hairdressers Windle & Moodie worked on three shows during London Fashion Week; Margaret Howell, Mark Fast and Burberry, creating gorgeous beautiful hair for the Spring/Summer 2011 collections. Here's our backstage report from the first two shows...

Margaret Howell

First up was Margaret Howell on Sunday 19th September. The show wasn't planned to start until 11am but when you're working backstage at a show your call time is usually around three hours earlier so we were there from 8am (very early for a Sunday morn!) The overall look for the collection was quite minimalist and this was also translated through into the hair and make-up. For the show Neil created a chignon at the nape of the neck which was meant to look as if the girls had done it themselves. The hair was such a hit that Editor-in-Chief of British Elle, Lorraine Candy tweeted:

I think that you'll agree that this look is uber pretty, feminine and soft - perfect for Spring/Summer!

Mark Fast

Next up on the agenda and the very next day on the 20th September was the Mark Fast Spring/Summer 2011 show - a totally different designer with a totally different collection from the previous day. Show time was scheduled for 12pm so we had a call time of 9am (another early morning start!) I'm sure many will already know Mark for his sexy take on knitwear and this show was no exception. Incredibly intricate pieces which the models had to be helped into by their own little team of dressers, stunning, super-glittery eye make-up and great hair "to open out the face so that the girls looked pure and fresh" were on the menu today. Fashion Week season is upon us once again and New York is first to kick things off with their Spring/Summer 2011 collections. Neil is doing nine shows in seven days... Coming up: Ruffian, BCBG, Band of Outsiders, Peter Jensen, Marlon Gobel, Michael Bastian, Yigal Azrouel, Herve Leger and Nathan Jenden...

Ruffian

The inspiration for the Ruffian Spring/Summer 2011 collection was Susan Travers, the only woman to serve in the French Foreign Legion. This was translated through into the military-inspired clothes (khaki, gold buttons, crisp whites paired with pops of royal blue), golden-toned makeup as if the girls had just been through the desert and as for the hair? Neil gave the girls all a low side parting, then gelled down the hair using Bumble and bumble Straight before adding some Bumble and bumble Gel to make a chignon.

BCBG

The day after the Ruffian show was BCBG on September 10th. The whole look for the collection was quite minimal with lots of neutral tones and some brightly coloured pieces towards the end. Make-up and hair was kept quite simple with a pared down look adorning the models' faces and their hair pulled back into ponytails. The result was quite a fresh look, which is perfect for Spring.

Band of Outsiders

Moving on from BCBG the previous day and it's time for the Band of Outsiders show! A fun, quirky brand, this show isn't so much a show as a presentation where the models will be staying static whilst people mill about looking at the collection. Unlike the shows so far, this one will be comprised of both female and male models with the girls being split into two sub-groups "girl-girl" and "girl-boy". Girl-girls were given feminine, free-flowing, wavy hair whereas the girl-boys had their hair pulled back into a braid (taken out just before the start of the presentation but kept in a pony) with a low side-parting; a slightly edgier look which works with the two "girl" concepts. Marlon Gobel

Busy, busy day today with not one but two shows planned! First up is Marlon Gobel with a showtime of 1.30pm. It's a menswear show - with one woman - and some pretty cool designs that wouldn't look out of place on Chuck Bass. Hair on the guys was slicked back with a slight wave in it, complementing the fun, dandy-ish, gentleman look whilst the only woman in the show had her pulled back into a bouffant with a braid wrapped around it.

Peter Jensen

Next up with an 8pm showtime is Peter Jensen's Spring/Summer 2011 collection. The inspiration and muse for this collection was 1970's-era Shelley Duvall, her of "The Shining" fame. The girls were all given wigs (prepped before) with Shelley-esque cuts and wispy fringes to wear with the brightly coloured clothes and lace-up platforms.

Michael Bastian

The day after is another menswear show - Michael Bastian, who presented his take on American sportswear alongside tailored three-piece suits and formal evening wear. There was also a great leopard print that was used in some of the pieces, which managed to look really great and yet manly, which was quite surprising.

Herve Leger

Another double whammy lined up for today starting with Herve Leger scheduled to show at 2pm and after the Yigal Azrouel show due to start at 6pm. Firstly we have Herve Leger known for their skin-tight bandage dresses and the Spring/Summer 2011 collection was no exception. Referencing Marie Antoinette, the collection featured pieces based on corsets, lingerie and bustle skirts which made the already very sexy bodycon dress that much sexier. Hair was off the face, held back in a loose chignon just below the crown with two black elastic bands wrapped around the top of the head. Some pieces of hair were pulled through after to make it look like the girls had done it themselves.

Yigal Azrouel

Finally, the last show of the day was Yigal Azrouel, recently named as one of fashion's most eligible bachelors! His Spring/summer 2011 collection featured muted, neutral tones with splashes of citrus coloured pieces throughout. Make-up-wise the girls wore super-cool fluorescent pink smeared on just above their eyes, which looked a little futuristic whilst the hair was gelled for a wet-look appearance before being pulled up into another chignon (Neil says that Spring/Summer is the season of the chignon), which also adds to the futuristic look.

Nathan Jenden

It's Neil's last day of New York Fashion Week and the last show is Nathan Jenden. Nathan's inspiration for his Spring/Summer 2011 collection is "The Wiz" meets Diana Ross and that becomes apparent when looking at the hair. For the show Neil created a frizzy texture which was then put up in bunches. For the frizzy frizz, after prepping the hair was tonged in some sections with other smaller sections being crimped before the hair was brushed out, resulting in the uber cool, totally Seventies frizz. This was then tied off into bunches using hair bungees and then the hair fluffed up to make the bunches bigger. This show looked like it was a lot of fun with the multicoloured chairs and the yellow brick catwalk - check this out and all the other shows Neil did in the videos below!
